Pressure Regulators

Pressure Regulators prevent pipes from bursting in homes

Pressure RegulatorsCarter’s My Plumber provides a Licensed Plumber who is certified in Pressure Regulation. Pressure regulators are valves that will automatically turn off the flow of liquid or gas at a certain pressure. One sign of needing a new pressure regulator is water spewing from the water heater T & P valve. High water pressure is caused by the size of the water line that supplies a home, along with the volume being forced into a home. The primary function of a pressure regulator is to match the flow of water demand placed on the plumbing system. If the load flow decrease the regulator, then regulator flow will decrease. If the load increases then the regulator valve increases to control the pressure by restricting the amount.

Pressure regulators are used in a Home:

  1. The prevent wear and tear on appliances.
  2. To prevent extra pressure on the piping system that would cause them to burst.
  3. To prevent faucets form dripping, and toilets to run.
  4. To prevent water hammer in the pipes of a home.

Pressure Regulator Location

Pressure regulators are located on the main water line that comes into the house. Water will be constricted through the valve and then released at a reduced pressure into the house. Normal pressure is between 40 and 60 psi. Anything above this perimeter can cause damage to plumbing pipes and appliances.

Licensed Plumbers must install Pressure Regulators

Pressure regulators can be installed by a Licensed Plumber. At Carter’s My Plumber, our technician’s are trained to measure water pressure and they are proficient in installing pressure reducing valves. New installations involve adjustments to the main water line. This could mean reworking the main water shutoff valve in order to regulate the appropriate pressure. It’s a delicate balance and its critical to get a precise balance. It’s important to measure the consequence of improper water pressure which will cause toilets to run, faucets to drip, water hammer to occur and pipes to burst.
