Living in one of Indianapolis’s many historic neighborhoods has its charm–tree-lined streets, beautiful architecture, and a sense of timeless character that newer homes simply can’t replicate. But with age comes a different kind of upkeep, and for many homeowners in areas like Meridian-Kessler, Irvington, or Lockerbie Square, that often means dealing with original plumbing systems.

One of the most disruptive problems older homes can face is a failing or broken sewer line. Traditionally, repairing this kind of damage meant digging trenches through yards, or worse, underneath foundations, sidewalks, or even inside the home. Fortunately, modern technology offers a far less invasive alternative: trenchless sewer line repair.

At Carter’s My Plumber, we’ve built a reputation as one of the best plumbers in Indianapolis, and we specialize in providing modern solutions tailored for even the oldest homes.

Sewer Line Repair

Understanding Sewer Problems in Historic Homes

Most historic homes in Indianapolis were built in the early to mid-20th century, and many still rely on the original sewer infrastructure, including pipes made of clay, cast iron, or even Orangeburg (a type of bituminous fiber pipe popular from the 1940s to 1970s). These materials are prone to cracking, corrosion, root intrusion, and collapsing over time.

Because these homes were built long before modern plumbing codes and city infrastructure improvements, sewer lines can be shallow, poorly sloped, or unusually configured. It’s not uncommon for older sewer pipes to run underneath large trees, additions to the home, or historic hardscaping that can’t easily be removed.

Digging to reach and replace these sewer lines can pose major problems, including:

  • Damage to landscaping or mature trees
  • Disruption of original stone or brick pathways
  • Foundation concerns or concrete removal
  • Permitting restrictions in historic preservation zones

That’s why trenchless sewer repair is such a game-changer.

What Is Trenchless Sewer Line Repair?

Trenchless technology allows professional plumbers to repair or replace underground sewer lines without digging large trenches. Instead, we use one or two small access points, typically at the entry and exit of the sewer line, and perform the repair underground using specialized equipment.

There are two main trenchless methods we use:

1. Pipe Lining (Cured-In-Place Pipe or CIPP)

This method involves inserting a flexible liner soaked in resin into the damaged pipe. Once it’s in place, the liner is inflated and then cured, usually with hot water or steam, creating a new, jointless pipe within the old one. This method is ideal for pipes that are cracked or corroded but still structurally intact.

2. Pipe Bursting

When the old pipe is too damaged to line, we use pipe bursting. A conical tool is pulled through the existing pipe, breaking it apart while simultaneously pulling a new pipe into its place. The new pipe is typically high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is durable, long-lasting, and resistant to roots and corrosion.

Why Trenchless Is Ideal for Historic Indianapolis Homes

Preservation of Property

For homeowners in historic districts, preservation isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s often about compliance with city regulations and maintaining property value. Trenchless repair means your brick walkway, landscaping, or vintage stone wall can stay exactly where it is.

Minimal Disruption

Replacing a sewer line with traditional excavation can take a week or longer–and that’s before you account for restoration. Trenchless repairs often take just one to three days, and there’s far less mess involved.

Long-Lasting Solution

The materials we use for trenchless replacement are designed to last 50 years or more. That means homeowners can upgrade their sewer systems once and enjoy modern reliability for decades to come, all without compromising the charm or integrity of their historic property.

Is Trenchless Sewer Repair Right for Your Home?

Not every sewer line issue qualifies for trenchless repair. In some cases, like when a pipe has severe sagging or there is a complete collapse, excavation may still be the only viable option. But for many Indianapolis homeowners, especially those in historic homes, trenchless technology is a powerful, property-preserving alternative.

If you’re experiencing frequent backups, gurgling drains, or unexplained yard sogginess, it might be time to investigate what’s happening below the surface. Our team can perform a detailed video inspection and determine if trenchless repair is right for your property.
