How to Find City Water Shut-Off Valves
For people that get their water from a city. Their water shut-off is either located somewhere next to their water heater / furnace or in a utility room/basement. Or if you live in a decently warm place, it quite possibly is located outside in your yard. It is covered by either a plastic or metal top. Do not worry if you cannot find it. A licensed plumber can.
Be careful if your water shut-off valve is outside of your home and underground. These valves can be pretty deep and may need a curb key to turn off.
How to Find Well Water Shut-Off Valves
You will have two shut-off valves if you have well water. The first is between the well and the pressure tank. And the other is between the pressure tank and your house plumbing. You will only need to shut off one to completely shut off the water to your home.
What Will The Shut-Off Valve Look Like?
The main water shut-off valve in a utility room or basement will most likely be:
Gate Valves
Gate Valves are reliable. But, if you have never turned the valve before. Go ahead and do it to make sure it will turn!

If you have plastic or copper main water pipes leading into the house you may have a ball valve. This valve is open when the handle is aligned straight with the pipe. The valve is closed when it is turned clockwise!
