At Carter’s My Plumber, we understand 2020 has been tough year for many people in our community. This pandemic has created so many tough challenges. Whether it be your finances, job status, health, childcare, or overall livelihood we all have been or know a loved one who has been drastically impacted by the pandemic. With all of the problems linked to the pandemic, Carter’s does not want lack of hot water to be one of them!
A few months ago, we created a program called CARTER CARES. This program gives away one hot water plus installation per month to someone in our community in need. Over the past few months, Carter’s has been able to provide multiple members of our community with a brand new hot water heater and a sense of peace knowing hot water is no longer an issue. Our latest recipient shared with us her background and how Carter’s impacted her during a rough time.
Our December recipient is a single mother of three who took a hard hit during the pandemic. She was forced to quit working in order to care for her three children, who were now home full time due to school closure. On top of providing childcare and fulfilling household responsibilities, she was also now assisting her children with E-learning.
While being overwhelmed with her family’s new routine, her furnace quit working and her water heater starting leaking, leaving them using portable heaters for warmth and taking cold showers. Being a single mother, all responsibility fell on her shoulders and she found herself in a really tough spot. She reports her water heater had been out for 2-3 months. Occasionally her water would be “warm” for a few minutes, but never any longer than that. On top of the cold showers and lack of warmth in the home, her gas bill was outrageous from leaving her gas running all the time. It seemed as though she just could not catch a break.
Our recipient’s mother heard of the CARTER CARES program while listening to 95.5 and immediately called her daughter, who she knew could greatly benefit from the initiative. Carter’s received the CARTER CARES application on December 22 and was able to call our recipient, coordinate a time, and provide and install a brand new water heater the very next day. The family of four was able to enjoy hot water right before the holidays and the cold weather that inevitably comes with them!
The resident of Indianapolis reports, “Getting this water heater meant so much to me. I had just called my mom that very morning crying because I had been so down on my luck. I couldn’t believe I was actually chosen to get it!” She reports the technicians that provided the installation were great young men. The entire process was a smooth and easy from start to finish. They completed the job quickly and efficiently and she had no concerns! She also informed us another bonus was that the technicians were great with her dog! She stated, “We have a dog in our home. Normally I am asked to let them outside when people come in our home, but your technicians bent down, started petting our dog, and that really never happens at our home. It was great.”
When asked how it felt to no longer have the concern of a leaking water heater, she states “I have a lot of stress off of me now that I have this water heater. I don’t have to worry it about anymore. It just means so much to me!”
