Low Water Pressure

Isn’t it irritating when you are trying to get those dishes done and your hot water pressure is low? Or even worse showering with low water pressure! Simple problems like the shut-off valve being closed or faucet being blocked can cause low water pressure.  Plumbing blockages and or water leaks can also lower your overall home water pressure.  Before you panic and call that plumber there are many ways you can troubleshoot the problem.  Below, let’s look at a few simple tips and tricks you can attempt for low water pressure!

Clogged Fixtures

The number one cause of low water pressure is faulty fixtures.  Older fixtures are more than likely clogged by rust, limestone, or dirt.  This reduces the water quality because it hinders the flow of the water.  Turn your faucets on one at a time to see which one is defective.  Once you have determined the fixture that is faulty make sure the screen and aerator are clean and clear.  A clogged aerator or screen can lower water pressure for the entire fixture.

Water Valve

Check your homes shut-off valves to see if it is sufficiently open.  Your home has two shut-off valves one is on the street side of the meter, and the other is on your home side of the meter (both are usually on a wall near where the lines come in).  If these valves are not completely open this is what is causing the issue with your pressure.

Sediment Build Up In Pipes

Sediment buildup occurs over time inside pipes, as water contains a number of minerals, including lime and calcium.  This buildup can cause low water pressure because it begins to clog faucets in your home as mentioned above.  These chemicals can also cause corrosion resulting in water leaks in your home.  Sediment buildup is more common in homes where hard water consists.  It might be a good idea to invest in a water softener if you live in an area with hard water.  In the long run, it will save the plumbing in your home as well as your own health, keeping your skin and hair from drying out! Who doesn’t love soft skin.

Water Pressure Regulator

If you are still having issues with low water pressure a water pressure regulator might be a good investment.  Low water pressure increases the amount of time it takes to fill a sink, toilet or washing machine as well as to take a shower. The regulator perfectly monitors and balances the pressure inside your water pipes.  This ensures you that you have the pressure needed to finish up those daily tasks.
